Guwahati: Bringing a glimmer of hope to the rape victims of Manipur, the state Government on Wednesday formally opened 2 fast track courts for trial of POSCO and rape cases.

Due to the ongoing pandemic situation, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh was compelled to inaugurate the courts via video conferencing. He was joined by several prominent members of his cabinet, including the Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, during the inauguration ceremony.

Announcing the development via a tweet, Biren wrote, "For speedy disposal of Rape and POCSO cases, I have inaugurated today two Fast-Track Special Courts (FTSC) via video conferencing from the Cabinet of Chief Minister's Secretariat, Imphal. Hon'ble Dy. CM Y. Joykumar, Hon'ble Ministers - L. Jayantakumar & Karam Shyam- also attended."

The Government's intention to open two fast track courts first came to light after a declaration made by Governor Najma Heptulla during the Budget Session of the Manipur Assembly in February of this year.

"Moreover, the state government has also decided to open two fast-track courts for trial of POCSO and rape cases in a time-bound manner," Heptullah had stated during her inaugural address.
