Manipur CM inspects UNACCO school, soon to be turned into 100-bed Covid-facility

Notably, UNACCO school is the first such centre being set up at a private property in the state after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

Guwahati: Amid a skyrocketing number of Covid-19 cases in the state, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday visited the UNACCO School at Meitram, Imphal West, to see the feasibility of developing it into a temporary Covid Care centre for the treatment of only Covid-19 patients, and to make it "functional at the earliest."

According to media reports, contact was made with firms based outside the State to supply the needed equipment needed to set up the COVID care centre, a day after the State Government talked with the management of UNACCO School to use it as a Covid-19 facility amid booming cases.

It needs mention here that with the increase in the COVID-19 cases, Additional Director (Health), Dr Arkey said that the department has identified UNACCO School, Meitram as a COVID Care Centre of the State and around 100 beds will be set up in the first phase to turn the hospital into a dedicated facility. The decision to turn UNACCO School into a dedicated Covid-19 facility was taken following a meeting between state health officials, health mission and authorities of UNACCO School chaired by chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday.

Notably, this is the first such centre being set up at a private property in the state after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

Covid-19 Cases in Manipur:

According to the Union Health Ministry's data, Manipur has reported a total of 272 Covid-19 cases, out of which 214 cases are active; 58 patients have been released after recovering from the virus. It is pertinent to mention here that the state has registered the lion's share of these cases after the Government eased the restrictions on inter-district travel to repatriate citizens who were stranded amid the lockdown.

With the return of around four lakh natives from the south and north India, coronavirus cases in eight north-eastern States have spiked upwards at a dramatic rate.

Meanwhile, the number of cases have also contained to tick upwards in India. More than 2.56 lakh coronavirus cases have been reported in India till now after a record number of 9,983 cases were reported on Monday, even as the government has allowed a number of relaxations after over two months of lockdown. After the rapid surge in the number of Covid-19 cases, India has become the fifth worst-hit nation by the deadly virus in the world. Globally, the United States still leads the tally with 2,026,493 cases and 113,055 deaths.
