IMPHAL: Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced a beautification project aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Imphal and the Kongba River banks, with an estimated budget of approximately Rs 86 crore. During his speech as the chief guest at the World Wetlands Day observance at Leishang Hiden in Canchipur yesterday, the Chief Minister remarked that people seem to have overlooked the cultural and historical significance of Leishang Hiden.

He explained that the government chose to hold the World Wetlands Day celebration at Leishang Hiden to honor its cultural and spiritual importance, which is deeply embedded in Meitei tradition and folklore, and to encourage its conservation. The World Wetlands Day was organized by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change under the theme "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future."

In his address, Chief Minister N Biren Singh emphasized that the government would not permit the establishment of permanent shops at Leishang Hiden. He urged shopkeepers to use movable structures instead of occupying fixed spaces for selling goods at the site. The Chief Minister also mentioned that the development project on the eastern side of Leishang Hiden is nearing completion. He highlighted that a cycling track and an open gym would be constructed at the site.

Regarding the ongoing crisis in Manipur, N Biren expressed that people are voicing their discontent and frustration towards him for identifying illegal immigrants. He drew a comparison to United States President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration, adding that Manipur requires a leader like Trump. He called for the public's support in the government’s efforts to safeguard Manipur.

N Biren noted that the people of Manipur are facing challenges and hardships due to the consequences of previous appeasement policies. He also mentioned that a Rs 640 crore project to rejuvenate Lamphelpat is underway, with efforts being made to evict encroachers from the area. Reflecting on the past, the Chief Minister stated that before the BJP Government came to power, people were reluctant to travel at night. He urged the public not to take the law into their own hands and affirmed that it was the BJP Government that brought positive changes to the state.

The Chief Minister also informed that an FIR has been filed in connection with the recent mob attack on security forces who were attempting to destroy poppy plantations in Kangpokpi. He discussed the environmental consequences of poppy cultivation, deforestation, and the widespread use of urea.
