
IMPHAL: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has unveiled a Rs 25 crore initiative to restore the historic Langthabal Palace which is a landmark that once served as the capital of the Manipur kingdom. This initiative aims to preserve the palace’s architectural grandeur and reinforce its importance as a symbol of Manipur’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
The restoration project will also involve the relocation of the Assam Rifles, who have occupied parts of the site for years. This initiative aims to revitalize the palace and enhance accessibility for cultural and historical activities.
In addition, a Rs 10 crore project has been initiated to restore the Chandranadi water channel, an 18th-century landmark near the palace. These initiatives aim to highlight Manipur’s historical significance,complemented by plans to develop educational materials such as books and films to further share the state's rich heritage.
Meanwhile, earlier last week, the state government decided to restore the historic Langthabal Palace, an effort to preserve Manipur's cultural heritage. The palace was originally constructed in 1827 AD by King Gambhir Singh. Since the British colonial period, it has been a base for the Assam Rifles.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh recently inaugurated the foundation stone for the construction of new facilities to house the Assam Rifles. He highlighted the historical importance of the site and addressed the longstanding public demand for the relocation of the security forces during the event.
