IMPHAL: Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an amalgam of civil society organizations of the Meitei community, urged the central government to enhance security along the India-Myanmar border and take actions against the armed militant groups which are causing unrest in the region.
In a statement released on Tuesday, COCOMI demanded an investigation into allegations of coordination between security services and Kuki armed groups. It underlined the necessity of taking prompt action to destroy militant infrastructure and deal with broader issues impacting the security and stability of the state.
The Centre must take decisive action to seal the India-Myanmar border and disband the structures of armed militant groups within a given timeframe," COCOMI stated.
The organization stressed the urgent need for a holistic approach to check infiltration, illicit poppy cultivation, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking, which they claim are eroding law and order in the region. Moreover, COCOMI stressed the need of maintaining demographic balance in Manipur, noting that such measures should fundamentally serve the long-term stability and harmony of the state.
The demands came amid rising concerns over how security lapses, including their potential implications on local communities, should be dealt with. COCOMI stated that the Central Government should take definitive steps in dealing with these issues, ensuring a significant degree of transparency in dealing with allegations against security personnel and armed groups.
