Manipur Congress Promises Repeal Of AFSPA If Voted To Power

IMPHAL: In the Congress party manifesto for Manipur Assembly Elections released on Friday 4 February, the party promised to repeal the controversial Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA).

People from the states of Manipur and Nagaland have been demanding for a long period of time for AFSPA to get repealed completely from the states.

The act has become much controversial and became the centre of attraction for many after the incident in Nagaland's Mon district in which civilians were allegedly killed by the Army Para Commandos during their operation of targeting terrorists.

Since the incident, a large section of people from Manipur and Nagaland expressed their choice of removing the act as the special powers used by Armed forces in disturbed areas seems to be not for the benefit of the general public.

The Congress party therefore prior to the assembly election scheduled in February stated if they are voted in power by the people of the state the party will repeal the act.

The government of Manipur has extended the status of disturbed areas in the state for 1 year with effect from 1st December of last year. The Imphal Manipur area does not fall in the part of disturbed areas.

The Congress party manifesto adds other promises ahead of the assembly election that includes free medical treatment and aid for children in the state, formation of a trade centre in the state of Manipur,

The manifesto also added Municipal cultural diversity policy, formation of state regiment, 3 years upper age limit relaxation to unemployed youth in Manipur due to the covid pandemic, compensation for wrongly arrested media persons among others.

The Manipur Assembly is scheduled to be held on 27 February and 3 March following two phases of voting.
