IMPHAL: As a measure to counter growing tensions in Imphal West district, Manipur, a curfew has been put in place from 8 PM to 5 AM, starting from March 1, 2025. The Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, issued a letter on February 28, expressing serious concerns for possible violations of peace and public order due to the illegal activities of anti-social groups within the area.
The police report underscored the threat to human life and property, which led to the application for prohibitory orders under Sub-section (2) of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. The order underscores the need to ban congregations of five or more persons with weapons, stones, or other hazardous objects, as such gatherings may worsen the situation.
Because of the urgency of the situation, the order was imposed without prior notice. The curfew requires people to stay indoors within the given time, with only movement allowed between 5 AM and 8 PM, subject to the condition that no activity interferes with the existing law and order.
The authorities have also called on members of the public to adhere to the curfew to promote security and stability within the area. The situation is being closely followed, and reports will be released as required in order to tackle any developments within the area.
