IMPHAL: The Manipur government has started a project aimed at the restoration and development of Ikoppat Lake, which is presently experiencing severe environmental stress due to vast encroachments and agricultural activities by several fishing co-operative societies. Located around 32 km southeast of Imphal, the lake is situated between the villages of Athokpam and Khangabok.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh met with local leaders during a recent visit to the area and acknowledged the community's concerns regarding the preservation of water bodies surrounding Ikoppat Lake. CM Singh announced a series of development projects, including a budget of Rs. 1.2 crore for the cleaning of the lake's surface area, which spans 13.5 km, as well as the Loukhong wetland.
Officials reported that the depth of the lake has been reduced significantly. A physico-chemical analysis of water samples indicates severe levels of pollution. The estimated volume of the lake is approximately 0.013 cubic kilometers.
Besides the restoration work on the lake, Singh also announced other plans for developing the Ikoppat and Khangabok water bodies, and an allocation of Rs. 50 lakhs was also proposed for the installation of water pumps in four paddy fields namely Louhonbi Loukon, Keipha Loukon, Kiyam Loukon, and Tentharam Loukon. An open gym facility in the locality will also be sanctioned by the Chief Minister with a view to bettering the community facilities and to promote health amongst the public.
