IMPHAL: In a remarkable event, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey graced the closing ceremony of the 19th Governor’s Cup State Level Fencing Championship, 2023, held at the Indoor Stadium, SAI Takyel, Imphal. Addressing the audience as the chief guest, Governor Uikey highlighted the increasing popularity of fencing in Manipur, crediting the Manipur Fencing Association's establishment in 1976 for initiating this growth.

Governor Uikey expressed her delight at Manipur's fencers showcasing their prowess by securing medals in the National Games across the country. Particularly, she celebrated the success of Manipuri women fencers who have clinched gold, silver, and bronze medals at various international championships in the senior category. She emphasized the evolution of fencing from its historical combat roots to a modern competitive sport demanding skill, agility, and strategic thinking.

Acknowledging Manipur's contributions to the national and international fencing scene, Governor Uikey praised the state for producing numerous talented fencers who have consistently brought home medals. She extended her congratulations to the award winners and encouraged all participants, underscoring the importance of active engagement in such competitions.

Governor Uikey highlighted the innate sports talent among Manipur's youth, prompting the approval of a Sports University by the Government of India. She emphasized the role of sports in character-building, promoting discipline, brotherhood, and social harmony—a need of the hour for Manipur. Urging the youth to steer clear of drug addiction, she emphasized its detrimental effects on both individual energy and cultural heritage.

Addressing the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur, Governor Uikey assured that the central and state governments are actively working to restore peace, harmony, and brotherhood. She appealed for cooperation from the public, urging them to ignore rumors, exercise discretion, and avoid resorting to violence. Expressing confidence in the collective efforts of all sections, she anticipated the reestablishment of peace and harmony in the state.

The ceremony concluded with Governor Uikey presenting the overall team champion trophy to the Imphal East team. The President of Manipur Fencing Association, M. Lokendro Singh, and Former President, Th. Joykumar Singh, also graced the occasion as President and Guest of Honour, respectively.
