Manipur Governor Inaugurates Maternity Ward at Ningthoukhong CHC

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Thursday inaugurated the Khwairakpam Krishnagopal Memorial Building at Ningthoukhong in Bishnupur district, formally dedicating the facility to the Community Health Centre (CHC) there — with a particular focus on strengthening maternal healthcare in the region.

The building was constructed by the Gojendro Foundation within the CHC premises and has been handed over to the Manipur government to support the expansion and upgradation of the centre, including the establishment of a dedicated maternity ward.

Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Bhalla described the occasion as something that goes beyond the opening of a physical structure.

He called it a meaningful step toward strengthening hope, dignity, and care for the people of the region — especially women and mothers, whom he described as the backbone of Manipuri society.

Bhalla expressed hope that the initiative would inspire more organisations and individuals to contribute toward nation-building, and said the facility would serve as a lasting symbol of compassion, unity, and shared responsibility.

The Governor used the occasion to pay tribute to the Ima community — a term meaning "mother" in Meiteilon, the Manipuri language — highlighting their historic role in shaping society and championing justice, peace, and the assertion of rights.

He described their enduring strength, resilience, and moral leadership as a defining thread in Manipur's social fabric.

Bhalla commended the Gojendro Foundation for its continued service to marginalised communities and its contribution in building and donating the facility to the state government.

He called the initiative a noteworthy example of synergy between philanthropy and public service, emphasising that improved access to quality maternal healthcare would contribute to safer motherhood and healthier future generations in Manipur.

Representatives of the CHC also submitted memoranda to the Governor during the event, flagging concerns related to service delivery gaps and equipment constraints at the centre — issues that the new facility is expected to partially address.

Minister for Home, Youth Affairs and Sports Konthoujam Govindas Singh attended the event along with MLAs from the Thanga, Nambol, Oinam, Moirang, Kumbi, and Lilong assembly constituencies.
