MOREH: The Hill Tribal Council (HTC), a powerful Kuki-Zo organization, has notified all government and private schools in Moreh town, under the Tengnoupal district, to remove the Manipuri/Meitei Mayek subject from their respective school syllabi starting this academic year (2025-2026).

In a notification, the HTC stated, “All government and private schools in Moreh town are hereby notified to drop the Manipuri/Meetei Mayek subject from your school syllabi effective this academic year.”

The Hill Tribal Council issued a notification on Thursday, stating that the purpose of the notification is to ensure that students are taught only useful and productive subjects and to respect the sentiments and culture of the indigenous Kuki-Zo people, considering the current political conflict.

This move comes amid the ongoing political conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in the state. The council instructed that students opt for important subjects like Hindi, English, Mizo, Thadou, Hmar, Zou, Maring, Anal, Vaiphei, Paite, Gangte, or any other modern Indian language (MIL) subjects instead.

The council also warned that non-compliance with the notice may result in penalties. It’s important to note that the Meitei language, the official language of Manipur, uses the Meitei Mayek script. According to the Sahitya Akademi, the history of this script can be traced back to at least the 6th century.
