IMPHAL: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and the Government of Manipur have launched an ambitious ₹3,300 crore infrastructure initiative to tackle Imphal's escalating traffic challenges. The project involves building durable Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) roads, developing a 51.23 km Imphal Ring Road with funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and incorporating flyovers, underpasses, and bridges.

Unlike traditional asphalt roads, RCC roads, known for their durability and low maintenance, will be introduced across greater Imphal. These roads are designed to withstand heavy rains and traffic volumes, reducing potholes and ensuring smoother commutes. While the initial cost is higher, RCC roads are a long-term investment in the city’s infrastructure.

The Imphal Ring Road project is a strategic infrastructure initiative spanning 51 kilometers, aimed at alleviating urban traffic congestion. With a total investment of ₹1,766 crore, the project leverages a unique funding model where the central government provides 80% of the financing, complemented by Asian Development Bank support and state contributions. The state’s portion is interest-free, repayable over 25 years.

The plan involves the construction of multiple flyovers, underpasses, and six major bridges to improve road safety and efficiency. A key feature is the Salanthong Bridge in Imphal East, which is being raised by four feet to prevent monsoon flooding, a persistent problem in the city.

Officials anticipate annual economic savings of ₹250 crore once the project is completed, through reduced expenses for road repairs, fuel consumption, and Goods and Services Tax (GST). The project is also expected to create numerous job opportunities, generating demand for construction workers, engineers, and other skilled professionals. Enhanced connectivity is likely to attract businesses and investors, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

The infrastructure overhaul also emphasizes flood mitigation. By raising crucial bridges and improving drainage systems, the government aims to reduce disruptions from heavy rains, ensuring a dependable road network year-round.

The project faces challenges, including land acquisition and dealing with encroachments. While the government has assured fair compensation, opposition from affected parties could delay progress. Timely execution is crucial to maintaining public trust and reaping the project’s benefits.

Once completed, the revamped infrastructure will reduce travel times, improve mobility, and create a foundation for broader urban development. From boosting tourism to encouraging residential projects, the initiative is expected to transform Imphal’s socio-economic landscape.
