The state-level observance was organized by the State Art and Culture Department at the Maharaj Gambhir Singh Samadhi complex, Canchipur, with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh as the chief guest.
The Chief Minister led the gathering in offering floral tributes to the memorial and portrait of the late king, who spearheaded the war against Awa (Burmese) to end the Seven Years of Devastation in 1826. He also offered flowers at the statues of Meidingu Narasingh and Sana Herachandra. Later, he offered Tarpan and paid obeisance at Dhop Pala.
A contingent of Manipur Rifles offered a guard of honor, a gun salute, and sounded the last post as a mark of respect to Maharaj Gambhir Singh and all those who laid down their lives in the war for the motherland.
Speaking to media persons, N. Biren Singh said consultation with intellectuals and historians to engrave the history of different Kings of Manipur since 33 AD on the fencing wall of the Maharaj Gambhir Singh Samadhi complex is almost complete. However, it could not be expedited and completed on time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He stated that the people of the current generation need to study the ideals of the forefathers, who did not have any fear to lay down their lives for the motherland and adopt their patriotic feelings.
