Manipur: Massive Protest Sets Off After Accused Killer Girlfriend Arrives Court

IMPHAL: When a woman accused of murdering her boyfriend was brought before a local court in Manipur's Kangkpokpi district on Friday, hundreds of women protested vociferously.

Using the slogans "We demand justice that is worthy justice," "Bail must not be granted to Sonia's plea," and "We will fight for justice," female JAC volunteers protested in front of the courthouse gate.

After the 40-year-old accused Thokchom Sonia was hauled away and ordered to judicial detention for 8 days, the female demonstrators screamed chants calling for the lady to be punished.

On February 10, Akoijam Nonganba, 40, a resident of Kwakeithel in Imphal West district and the son of the late AK Pilot Langam, a former minister of Manipur, went out with his girlfriend, Thokchom Sonia. On February 12, however, he was discovered dead at Changoubung, under the jurisdiction of Kangpokpi Police Station.

Sonia has fled ever since, but on February 17, the police apprehended her.

According to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, one of the two NSCN (IM) cadres who were reportedly involved in the crime was detained and placed in judicial custody. One more is still evading capture.

According to Marry Vaiphei of the Twiongkun Area Women Committee, the victim must receive justice as quickly as possible. The JAC has asked the NSCN (IM) for clarification regarding claims that the group was complicit in the murder of Ak Nonganba.

In Tezpur, Assam, an Army officer has been detained on suspicion of being connected to a murder case. The army officer who got arrested for alleged link with the matter has been identified as Lt. Colonel Amrindar Singh Walia.

Amrindar Singh was taken into custody from the Tezpur Army Battalion's 4th Corps Headquarters.

It should be noted that on February 15, the body of a woman was found in Changsari, Kamrup. The woman was dumped by the culprits after a well planned murder. The deceased person's body was discarded close to Interstate 31. As per source, the officer had some sort of love angle with the deceased woman.
