IMPHAL: A 71-year-old woman who had gone missing for a week was unfortunately discovered dead in a lake in Manipur's Thoubal district. The incident has shocked the local community, with questions raised over the circumstances of her disappearance and death.
Ningombam Ibemu, a resident of Thoubal Ningombam Mayai Leikai, went missing on March 17. Although her family members, police personnel, and central paramilitary officials conducted extensive searches, her body was eventually found on Tuesday evening on the shore of Waithou Pat Lake, which falls under the purview of Thoubal Police Station.
The authorities confirmed that the body was initially seen by local fishermen, who promptly reported the matter to the police. A group of officers and forensic specialists went to the scene to retrieve the remains. Due to the peculiar circumstances of the case, law enforcement authorities have filed it as an unnatural death and opened an investigation.
Ibemu's family had previously reported her missing and initiated a week-long search operation. Their worst fears, however, were realized with the recovery of her body. The remains have, as per standard procedure, been taken to the state-owned JNIMS hospital mortuary for a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
The sad event left the people in the local community in shock, with most of them calling for the authorities to investigate the matter to the fullest extent. While investigations are ongoing, Ibemu's family and neighbors want answers, hoping justice will prevail in this devastating scenario.
