IMPHAL: The Naga People's Organisation (NPO) Senapati has called on the Committee on the Unification of Tribes of Sadar Hills (CoTU) to cease imposing constant and sudden blockades on National Highway-2 (NH-2). In a statement issued by its Information and Publicity Secretary, the NPO expressed support for CoTU's right to protest against the perceived inaction and injustice of the State and Central Governments. The NPO said that such steps must not have adverse effects on the welfare of the Naga community in Senapati district.
The NPO said that the frequent blockade and shutdowns on NH-2, which is the only vital route for the movement of goods and services, have caused extreme hardship to the people of Nagaland in the region. The organization appealed to CoTU to consider protecting the rights of the Naga community and the flow of traffic on the highway.
However, the NPO also demonstrated an understanding of the complexity of the ongoing conflict and insisted that NH-2 be a "safe zone" for transportation. It further expressed anxiety over the continued threat to free movement on the highway, even when State and Central security forces are present.
The NPO asked CoTU to adopt a cooperative approach at the beginning of the new year and to act responsibly and considerately so that they could have peaceful coexistence in the region.
