Manipur: Old Cachar Road To Be Transformed Into National Highway

IMPHAL: Govindas Konthoujam, minister of public works, announced to the assembly on Monday that the ancient Tongjei Maril or Old Cachar Road will be upgraded to a national highway (NH). During the British era, Tongjei Maril was a vital road linking Manipur and Assam.

He was responding to a query put up by lawmaker Janghemlung Panmei, who is now serving as the representative for Tamenglong Seat in Tamenglong District. He stated that the road is one of the seven whose upgrade to NH classification has been granted. “The government is taking up necessary steps in this regard”, Govindas added.

Regarding a different issue, Konthoujam claimed that the Imphal-Kangchup-Tamenglong road, which is being funded by the Asian Development Bank, is progressing. As of January 31, it had made 78% of its physical progress and 72.60% of its financial progress.

The project's loan closing date is set for June 30, the minister continued.

Leishangthem Susindro, minister of public health engineering, also informed the house that the inhabitants of Imphal districts need 133.52 MLD of water daily, of which 85 MLD are obtained from Chingkhei Hill via Maphou Dam.

According to Susindro, 75% of families in the state acquired tap water as part of the Jal Jeevan Program.

In a recent development and after years of waiting by the residents, Tali, the last disconnected administrative centre and the last disconnected Assembly constituency of Arunachal Pradesh, has now been connected by road for the first time since India's independence.

On Saturday, Pema Khandu, the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, became the first chief minister to travel by road to Tali in the Kra Daadi district. He urged the residents of the Tali region to return to their own villages after moving to places like Ziro and Itanagar.
