IMPHAL: In a major breakthrough, Manipur Police arrested two members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group) (KCP-PWG) from Imphal West district. The arrests, carried out on Thursday in the Awang Wanagai Lamkhai area, were confirmed in a police statement issued on Friday.

The arrested persons have been identified as Md Imtiaz Khan and Irengbam Gulapi Singh, who have been accused of extortion. Their operations targeted brick farms, schools, and oil pumps in Pangei and Khongampat areas of Imphal East district. They also carried out similar activities at a health center in Sekmai, which comes under Imphal West district.

During the operation, law enforcement officers confiscated two mobile phones and other items from the suspects' possession. This arrest is part of an intensified crackdown on KCP-PWG activities in the region.

Earlier, on December 17, police arrested eight cadres of the same outfit in connection with the killing of two migrant labourers from Bihar. The incident, which occurred on December 14 near Keirak in Kakching district, had courted widespread condemnation and was prompting extensive police operations.

The recent arrests are a result of the continued efforts made by the law enforcing agencies to curb militant activities in Manipur. In both cases, an active investigation is going on as the authorities are keen to break up the extortion network and put the culprits behind the bars.
