
IMPHAL: Manipur Police arrested two individuals on the charge of extortion from the Sagolband Tera area on January 30. Based on reports of extortion threats to businessmen in market areas of the Imphal East district by using arms and serving extortion letters by members of an organization called "Volunteers Welfare Fund," Sagolband Tera Ingudam Leirak, Imphal West, teams of District Police Imphal East were activated immediately, and the teams picked up some individuals suspected to be involved in the extortion racket from the Sagolband Tera area.
The arrested persons have been identified as Yumlembam Khelen Singh alias Yairemba alias Thoiba alias John (40) s/o Y Chaoba Singh of Keirao Bitra Lairembi Leikai, Imphal East, and Huidrom Langamba Singh (30) s/o H Rajen Singh of Sagolband Tera Sapam Leikai, Imphal West. Two mobile phones, one lock and key set, and one demand note were seized from their possession.
They disclosed that they are working in association with some members and some ex-members of UG groups and demanded huge amounts of money (lakhs of rupees) from many businessmen in the Imphal area and threatened the businessmen by showing small arms and locking some shops also.
A case has been registered at Heingang police station, and they were produced before the court concerned. The court remanded them to police custody till February 1, as per sources.
