IMPHAL: In a major victory, Manipur police commandos apprehended a wanted militant and active UNLF member on Monday. The 26-year-old accused Thangjam Thoungamba Meitei was sought for his supposed role in the brutal killing of a 19-year-old student, police said in their official report.
The arrest follows the Manipur government ramping up search operations to arrest Meitei, who had evaded arrest for two weeks. Based on important tips given by alert residents, the police conducted a special drive and were able to arrest Meitei from Tiger Camp, Sagolmang, in the Imphal East district.
Meitei, the boy of Th. Sunil Meitei was said to have committed the daytime killing of Laishram Malemnganba Meitei, a student from Moirang Kampu. The victim's body was recovered near his house on February 10, 2025, causing shock throughout the region. Reacting to the brutal crime, the government of Manipur declared Meitei and another accused, Huiningsubam Yumlingba alias Poireinganba, as wanted offenders.
Even as Meitei has been detained, Poireinganba, the son of H. Ibohanbi and one who hails from Sagolmang is still hunted. Police officers have confirmed that every effort has been made to catch him and then bring him before the law.
The killing of Laishram Malemnganba had caused widespread indignation, leading authorities to initiate a massive manhunt. With one of the suspects now under arrest, the spotlight is still on arresting the second suspect and delivering justice.
