IMPHAL: In a swift operation, Manipur Police arrested a 45-year-old woman who was extorting by serving demand notices to doctors, shopkeepers, businesses, private companies, and government officials.
The arrest was confirmed on Thursday by authorities as part of an anti-extortion drive initiated by the Manipur Police Department.
The operation was launched on Wednesday afternoon after receiving specific intelligence regarding the movement of a suspected hybrid militant.
Following the tip-off, the anti-extortion unit carried out the operation in the Langol Game Village Zone III locality under the Lamphel police station in Imphal West District.
Security guards, in the police report, came across a suspect who attempted to flee when she spotted them.
But the guards quickly arrested the woman, later identified as Leihaorungbam Laishram (O) Sanatombi Devi, alias Ichal, who resided in Langol Game Village Zone III.
Investigations also revealed that she is a working member of the outlawed People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive).
The police also confiscated several demand letters and a cell phone from her possession, which were being used to threaten and extort money from individuals and companies in the Imphal area.
The authorities are now probing further into her activities and contacts in the banned militant outfit.
