IMPHAL: The bomb detection squad of the Manipur police successfully defused two high-explosive grenades near the residence of former Manipur Minister Bijoy Koijam in Imphal West district on Wednesday morning.

According to police reports, the grenades were discovered around 6 AM outside the residential gate of Bijoy Koijam at Thongju Pheijaleitong, under the jurisdiction of Singjamei police station. During a further search of the area, another grenade was found near the residence.

Bomb experts later detonated the grenades at the Dumping site of the Game Village Langol under the jurisdiction of the Lamphel police station in the evening. Authorities have registered a case in connection with the incident, and an investigation is currently underway. No individual or underground outfit has claimed responsibility for the bomb threat.

In a separate development, Manipur police arrested two members of the proscribed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) (PRO) on Tuesday in Imphal West district. The duo, identified as Ashem Dinesh Meetei (41) and Huidrom Tomba Singh (36), were apprehended from Namdulong Khuman Lampak Main Stadium Road.

According to the police, the two were involved in extortion activities in the Namdulong area. During the arrest, law enforcement officials recovered four mobile handsets, a two-wheeler, two wallets, Rs 9,260 in cash, an ID card, a side bag, and a leaflet of PREPAK (PRO). Further investigations into the case are ongoing.
