IMPHAL: In a massive security operation, Manipur Police, with the help of central security forces, successfully identified and dismantled two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) laid by insurgents along a Manipur-Myanmar border ridge in Churachandpur district on Friday.

The operation also resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of arms, ammunition, and explosives, officials confirmed.

The operation was undertaken based on intelligence reports from along the Myanmar border, in which tribal insurgents were reported to be marching along the border area to make their presence felt.

Acting in quick response, a combined force of Indian security forces was alerted and conducted a surprise search operation at the very long and thin hilltop of Dampi in the Churachandpur district, which shares its southern border with Myanmar.

In the course of the search, security forces found a variety of weapons and explosive materials. The items recovered included a.303 Rifle with a magazine, a single-barrel gun locally manufactured, a.22 rifle locally manufactured, and two Pumpi (locally manufactured long-range mortars). In addition, they also confiscated two 70 mm live rounds, four live Pumpi rounds, eight anti-riot stun shells, two SMC carbine magazines, a Baofeng radio set, a bulletproof helmet, two jungle shoes, and an ammunition pouch.

The prompt response of the security forces effectively neutralized a possible threat and kept insurgents from launching attacks in the area. The operation reflects the sustained efforts of the Manipur Police and central security forces in the upkeep of peace and security along the fragile border regions. Investigations are on to track the source of the seized weapons and the insurgent groups who had planted the explosives.
