Manipur: Poppy Fields Covering 110 Acres Destroyed in Ukhrul

Imphal: According to authorities, approximately 110 acres of illegalpoppy production were burned on Thursday in the Ukhrul district of Manipur. According to them, a combined team from the Khamasom Hill district administration, Assam Rifles, the Forest Department, and the district police carried out the operation.

They stated that eight cottages discovered in the fields were also destroyed by fire. According to the police, a formal complaint has been filed and an investigation is currently under progress.

The security forces were praised by Chief Minister N Biren Singh for the operation's success. "Your hard work and determination are making a significant difference in safeguarding our future," he said in a post on X.

Earlier this month, four people were arrested along with a gun and other weapons as part of Manipur Police's stepped-up efforts to combat illegal opium production in coordination with the central forces and the forest department. According to government sources, throughout the last 48 hours, activities were carried out in the northern and northwest regions of the state that share borders with Myanmar and Nagaland. Illegal opium cultivation totalling 39.76 acres was removed.

The joint team detained four people who were allegedly engaged in illegal poppy farming in the Khamason range, Ukhrul District of Manipur, which borders Myanmar to the east. They found and destroyed about 30 acres of the poppy plantation. Yatei SV (22) Peimi Ramsak (27), Lightson Shimrah (49), and Kapangkhui Khashim were the individuals who were detained.

Two knives and one air rifle were found in their possession. In the presence of an Executive Magistrate, the united team carried out yet another poppy destruction effort, destroying one acre of poppy planting in Mao Pungdong, which is part of Mao-PS in the Senapati district that borders Nagaland.

The area's village chairman is the target of additional necessary action. On December 5, the team also demolished 8.76 acres of poppy fields in the Kangpokpi district's Makuilongdi and Thonglang Atongba hill ranges. A complaint has been filed for more inquiry after the poppy plants, which were in the early stages of flowering, were destroyed.
