Manipur: Section 144 Imposed in Imphal

IMPHAL: Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in two districts of the Northeastern state of Manipur on December 9, Friday amidst fear of violence. It prevents the public from gathering at any place within the region where this section is imposed.

The prohibitory orders have been issued in the Imphal East and Imphal West districts of the state of Manipur following a demonstration on the night of Thursday. Women of the region had taken out a massive demonstration with torches as a mark of protest against the state government's policy to legalise alcohol sales in the state. Amidst fears of damages to life and property during any such protest, the district administration has taken this step.

The order announcing the imposition of section 144 was issued by the Additional District Magistrate of Imphal East district, Shamin Shah. He mentioned that these developments pose a threat to the lives and properties of the people in the region.

His counterpart from Imphal West also issued a similar order. The Additional District Magistrate of Imphal West, T. Kirankumar mentioned that there were reports of non-locals who had entered Manipur illegally and are making a free movement in the district. Besides, the business community in the district is facing threats including extortion, from insurgents. To cope up with these issues and ensure that outsiders enter Manipur through the provisions of the Inner Line Permit system the prohibitory order was imposed.

At the beginning of this week, a riot broke out as members of two communities had disputes regarding the construction of a place of worship. The incident led to the destruction of several vehicles including cars and two-wheelers in the Tellipati region of the capital city. The chief minister also visited the location following the imposition of Section 144 in the locality.
