
IMPHAL: Security forces seized a large stockpile of arms, ammunition, explosives, and other combat supplies in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur on Sunday. A joint team of the Manipur police and Assam Rifles recovered the weapons during a search operation aimed at locating the hideouts of miscreants.
Acting on intelligence about armed miscreants planning attacks on rival groups, the joint team initiated a search operation in the hill ranges of L Jangnomphai and Freedom villages in the district. As the security forces approached during the operation, the armed miscreants fled the area, abandoning their weapons.
The operation led to the recovery of a 7.62 mm self-loading rifle (SLR), a 9 mm pistol, a single-barrel gun, a double-barreled gun, an improvised mortar, four 36-hand grenades, four Stardyne 90 explosives, and four electric detonators.
Other items recovered included eight live rounds of ammunition, a tube launcher, three detonators for 36 hand grenades, a walkie-talkie set, and four anti-riot shells. The seized cache of weapons was subsequently handed over to the local police.
In a separate operation in the jungle area of Khunkho Kuki village, the joint team recovered a point 22 rifle, a point 303 rifle, 49 live rounds of ammunition, and a magazine.
Meanwhile, during the previous week, during a special operation in the Churachandpur area of Manipur, four people were apprehended, including a suspected Kuki National Front (KNF) cadre.
According to police, they found an assault rifle manufactured in Myanmar, an air gun, forty rounds of live ammunition, twenty-two discharged cartridges, and an unregistered automobile in their unlawful possession.
Along with the firearms, the alleged KNF activist and three other criminals were taken into custody during the surprise operation. Later on, they are recognised as Jaipu Doujaithang (42) Kamlian (34), Malsom (20), Thangsiam Haokip (27), and the KNF Cadre.
