IMPHAL: In a grim incident, two non-Manipuri youths were shot dead on Saturday evening in the Kakching district of Manipur. The victims, identified as Sunalal Kumar, 18, and Dasharat Kumar, 17, are residents of Rajwahi village in Bihar's Gopalganj district.
Both were part of a group of five workers employed for the construction of a house in the Keirak area.
The shooting reportedly occurred on a quiet stretch of road as the victims and their colleagues were returning to their rented accommodation after finishing their day's work. Local sources suggest the area, usually calm, was shaken by the unexpected violence.
Sunil Kumar and Dasharat Kumar are two young migrant workers among many such workers who move to earn their livelihood from their hometown. The two young men hailed from the Jadavpur police station area in Bihar and had been employed to construct buildings in Manipur. This inter-state migration of labor has been the common trend followed by a large number of people to earn their livelihood.
The authorities were prompt in their response, with an intensive search operation underway to track down the culprits. Police are probing the motive behind the attack and are looking into multiple angles, including the possibility of targeted violence.
Given the sensitivity of the situation, law enforcement officials have refrained from disclosing additional details about the investigation. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of migrant workers in the region, which has seen sporadic incidents of violence in the past.
The tragic deaths of the two young men have stirred widespread condemnation. Activists and community leaders have asked for speedy justice, while underlining the need to ensure that workers, particularly those from outside the state, feel safe and secure.
As the case unfolds, the families of Sunalal and Dasharat, who await some justice served for their lost loved ones, do not fail to notice all this happening as a rude reminder of how migrant workers might be vulnerable and at risk within unfamiliar settings.
