IMPHAL: The Manipur government has announced a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh each to the families of two teenagers from Bihar who were fatally shot by unidentified assailants on Saturday in Kakching district. The victims, Sunalal Kumar (18) and Dasharat Kumar (17), were construction workers hailing from Bihar’s Gopalganj district.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh denounced the terrible murder as "an act of terrorism." He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. Singh said on X that such actions constitute a direct attack on social ideals and alluded to a potential wider conspiracy that may have been responsible for the occurrence.
"This dastardly act seems to be an attempt to destabilize Manipur and sow fear among its people," Singh said, calling for unity against forces that seek to create insecurity.
According to reports, the teenagers were attacked while cycling back to their rented accommodation at Kakching Bazar along the Kakching-Wabagai Road. The assailants fired on the duo, leaving them critically injured. Although the police rushed them to a hospital, both succumbed to their injuries en route.
The Chief Minister assured that the authorities are trying their best to arrest the culprits. Further, if required, the case will be given to the National Investigation Agency to ensure that the case gets the fullest investigation free of bias.
The current tragedy of Manipur raises questions regarding safety and underlying motives behind such attacks and makes citizens concerned about the stability of the state.
