IMPHAL: Chief Minister N Biren Singh is likely to resign on Friday, June 30, in the latest development to the ongoing crisis in the hill state of Manipur, according to sources. Biren Singh will hand over his resignation to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Friday at around 1 PM as the former failed to restore peace in the state after nearly 60 days of unrest.

According to the news report, Singh had repeated calls from New Delhi on Thursday in which he was given the choice to submit his resignation or have the Centre take over the reins of power. According to the report, the Assembly will probably be placed under animated suspension.

The report comes two days after Uikey visited New Delhi. During his tour, he met individually with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, among others, and briefed them on the situation in Manipur and the measures being done to restore calm.

On the other hand, on Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi departed from Imphal for Moirang. According to Keisham Meghachandra, state president of the Congress, he will go to the relief camps and meet the affected people there. He will then meet with ten leaders of like-minded political parties, UNC officials, and representatives of civil society organisations when he returns to Imphal.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi had earlier on June 29 visited a camp for those displaced by the ongoing unrest in Manipur. On June 29, Gandhi's convoy was briefly stopped at Bishnupur, but Gandhi's determination to visit the relief camps and interact with the displaced people has not wavered.

Many locals have been forced to leave their houses as a result of the fighting between the Meiteis and Kukis, which has created major suffering among the populace.
