IMPHAL: Amidst the worsening violence in Manipur, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched inquiries into three chilling cases that involved the killing of four women and three children.

These cases were transferred by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to the NIA for probe since the offenses involved are very serious and the situation is getting worse.

The agency began its probe on November 21 and 22, inspecting crime scenes and taking over case files from local authorities.  On November 11, unidentified militants attacked Borobekra, setting several houses ablaze and killing two civilians.

After this, the assailants increased the brutality of attacks by kidnapping and killing six people three of whom were women and three children. The violence spread to the Borobekra Police Station and its adjacent shops that also fell prey to shooting and burning attacks.

The security forces faced a fierce shoot-out in the area but they were able to recover two bodies from the burnt area. The victims included those abducted and murdered in Jiribam, which again points to the widespread nature of the atrocities. On the same day, militants attacked a CRPF post and Borobekra Police Station. In the attack, a CRPF constable was injured and evacuated to Silchar for treatment.

The security forces, during subsequent search operations, found the bodies of unidentified militants along with arms and ammunition. This case is an example of how volatile and dangerous the conditions are for security personnel in the region. The third case is that of the gruesome killing of Zosangkim, a 31-year-old mother of three from Jiribam. On November 7, armed militants reportedly raped and burned her alive at her home.

The case was registered by Jiribam Police on November 8. This incident has added to the mounting outrage over the ongoing violence in Manipur.

The NIA intervention, thus, is to unearth the deeper conspiracies behind the horrible incidents and ensure justice is meted out. The involvement of an anti-terror agency indicates that the ongoing conflict is really a grave affair, and so is the urgency for peace and stability in the region.
