Manipur Violence: Over 7,500 People Relocated, Additional Army Deployed in Violence-Hit Area

Internet cut, curfew imposed in eight districts of Manipur over violence during a tribal agitation on Wednesday.

GUWAHATI: Massive violence has engulfed Manipur's capital, Imphal, where numerous vehicles and religious sites have been set ablaze, and the Army has been deployed to control the situation. Churachandpur and Imphal are the most affected in the recent violent clash between locals and security forces. Police had to fire tear gas to control the situation. Internet service has been suspended for the next five days in Manipur.

The Indian Army and Assam Riffle have relocated more than 7,500 civilians in violence-torn Manipur following clashes and arson because of the inclusion of the majority Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. Relief and rescue operations continued throughout the night followed by flag marches.

ATSUM

The Military and Assam Rifles were deployed to Manipur where violence broke out. Up until this point, more than 7000 individuals were saved by the powers from the viciousness hit regions, and given shelter, he said, adding that more individuals are being moved to more secure spots.

The brutality broke out on Wednesday during the 'Ancestral Fortitude Walk' called by the All Ancestral Understudy Association Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung region of Churachandpur region to fight the interest of non-ancestral Meiteis, who rule the Imphal Valley, for Planned Clan (ST) status.

A senior police officer stated that clashes between tribals and non-tribals broke out during the rally, which attracted thousands of agitators.

On the other hand, Manipur high court summoned the President of ATSUM to appear before the court.

As a tribal solidarity march against the demand of Meetei was organized in all the hill districts of Manipur on Wednesday, the Manipur High Court issued a notice to the Chairman of the Hill District Committee (Manipura Legislative Assembly) and the Chairman of All Tribal, Student Union, Manipur for "inciting innocent hill people against the Supreme Court verdict".

The Manipur High Court both to appear before the court with reasons why they should not be punished for criticizing the Supreme Court's decision. The Supreme Court further directed the DGP Manipur to ensure their "personal aspects".
