IMPHAL: The controversial AFSPA and the long-standing liquor ban in Manipur were largely removed during the year's events by the BJP-led Chief Minister N Biren Singh's administration.
In particular, recent sources found that Manipur, a state in northeastern India, won the award for most improved small state for the third time in a row in 2022 after outperforming other northeastern states in eight out of 12 categories.
In the recently held states of the state award, Manipur outperformed other northeastern states by getting 1,219.5 out of 2000, followed by Mizoram at 1,147.6, Arunachal Pradesh at 1,142.8, Sikkim at 1,124.1, Nagaland at 1,066.9, Meghalaya at 1,034.1, and Tripura at 960.5.
In addition, the election for 60 assembly members in 2022 saw a record-high voter turnout of 90.28 percent in two parts on February 28 and March 5.

The saffron party made history in the elections, winning 32 seats, 11 more than its total in the 2017 elections when it had first taken office in the northeastern state and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were campaigning there.
On the other hand, Congress did poorly, obtaining only five seats, down from 28 in the prior elections. In the first year of the BJP government's second term, several significant choices were made.
Additionally, 15 police stations in six districts of Manipur were no longer subject to the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, as of March 31, 2022.
The decision was well received overall, although the NPF and Congress called for the repeal of AFSPA in the entire state. Districts inhabited by Naga or Kuki were excluded from the contentious Act's partial withdrawal.
The Act grants security personnel exceptional authority to search properties and make arrests without a warrant in regions designated as "disturbed," and it has been dubbed "draconian" by rights activists.
