Manipur's black rice gets Geographical Indication (GI) tag

GUWAHATI: Manipur's black rice has obtained Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Popularly known as Chakhao, the application for registering this variety of rice was registered a year ago by the Consortium of Producers of Chakhao (Black Rice) Manipur. The entire process was facilitated by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur and the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited.

The GI tag will help to boost the trade in the area. The tag ascertains that the rice from this area has special quality.
