Tamenglong: In a significant move towards ensuring clean and safe drinking water for all, the District Administration of Tamenglong, in collaboration with the District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM), launched the first-ever ‘Drink From Tap Mission’ at Akhui Village on Friday.
The initiative, the first of its kind in Manipur, aims to supply safe, potable water directly to every household, marking a transformative step in public health and basic infrastructure. Akhui Village, known as one of the cleanest in the district and located just 15 km from the district headquarters, has become the pilot site for this innovative mission. All 78 households in the village have been equipped with individual water taps, ensuring direct access to clean water.
The mission, aligned with the Har Ghar Jal objective, was officially inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Angshim Dangshawa, alongside CEO of ADC Tamenglong Kachamthai F Gangmei, SDO D. Meidinbui, ZEO N Abonpou Christopher, PHED EE Salew Lohrii Mao, AE Premson T Panmei, and VA Chairman Dimthaorei Panmei. Students, local leaders, and residents actively participated in the event.
During the launch, Dr. Angshim distributed Water Field Testing Kits to the villagers, encouraging community-level monitoring of water quality. PHED chemists conducted a demonstration on using the kits, with initial tests confirming that the water was safe for consumption.
The Deputy Commissioner, along with officials, also conducted field visits to inspect the functioning of water taps throughout the village. Later, they visited Akhui High School, a top government school in the area, and reviewed key infrastructure such as the drainage system built under the Pradhan Mantri Adi Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAAGY) and the Ayushman Bharat Health & Wellness Centre.
The ‘Drink From Tap’ mission is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for Akhui residents and serve as a model for similar projects across Manipur, promoting public health and equitable access to essential services.
