IMPHAL: Manipur's chief minister, N Biren Singh, stated that the state's economy will be focused on tourism in the future.

He claimed that in order to boost the state's tourism industry, the Manipur government has identified 57 tourist destinations that will be renovated.

He gave the House the information on Thursday, while addressing the policy cut motion brought up by opposition MLAs K Meghachandra Singh and Th Lokeshwar Singh in support of the demand for tourism during the ongoing third session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Prior to elaborating on the policy cut motions, N. Biren Singh briefed the House on Manipur's accomplishments, which were highlighted in a national media report.

According to the newspaper, the Manipur chief minister said that his state leads the northeastern states in terms of tourism.

The Manipur Chief Minister added that in order to boost tourism in the state, the current administration has expanded the number of locations where the Sangai festival will be held to 15.

He declared that Jessami, the site of the first combat fought on Indian territory between the Japanese and the British during the Second World War, will see more tourism attractions built there by the Manipur government.

Recently, the CM declared before the House that the cabinet had resolved to outlaw all mining-related operations in the state, including the usage of equipment for sand mining in riverbeds.

To protect the livelihoods of manual labourers, manual mining will be regulated, he continued.

The Chief Minister also said that the administration had cleared riverbanks from Kangpokpi to the Imphal River and mass-evicted toilets.
