Imphal: The fourth edition of the Shirui Lily Festival 2022 kicked off at Shirui village in Manipur's Ukhrul district on May 25.

The four-days long showpiece event was inaugurated by Governor La Ganesan in the presence of Chief Minister – N. Biren Singh. It may be noted that the event is taking place after a gap of two years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apart from Shirui village, the cultural extravaganza will also be held at Bakshi Ground in Dungrei where musical bands from across the country will take part in a singing competition titled 'Shirock'.

This annual gala event is hosted by the Directorate of Tourism and it has emerged as a platform that encourages harmony and unity amongst the people of the hills and valley.

 N. Biren Singh said that the visitors will be able to catch a glimpse of the scenic beauty of Shirui village, try local cuisines, and purchase local products such as Longpi ceramics, fruits, and chilies, among others during this event.

The Manipur CM added that the festival also throws light on the adoption of unique Tangkhul dog breed and promotes the rearing of Mithun, which happens to be of great significance for the inhabitants of Ukhrul.

He applauded the initiative undertaken by Tangkhul leaders, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and chiefs for backing the state government's campaign on the 'War On Drugs'. They had earlier imposed a ban on the poppy cultivation in all Tangkhul-inhabited areas of the state.

Meanwhile, the Manipur CM along with Governor – La Ganesan made a visit to the stalls of Shirui festival, which displays amazing products and attractions.

This occasion intends to raise awareness about the endangered 'Shirui Lily' which is endemic to the Kashong Hills in Shirui village and acknowledge the ongoing efforts to foster sustainable and responsible tourism.

The festival celebrates the vast biodiversity and rich cultural heritage of Manipur and enlightens the travellers about the Tangkhul Naga tribe of Ukhrul and allows them to explore the state's highest hill station through its cultural origins, values, and customs.

Live music and cultural shows, traditional dances, folk songs, beauty pageants, exhibits, indigenous games, and sports competitions will take place during the course of the four-day festival.

Notably, the flower was first discovered by English Botanist – Dr Frank Kingdon Ward from the New York Botanical Society in 1946 and he named it after his wife, Jean Macklin.

This endemic flora bagged the prestigious merit award in the Chelsea Flower Show organized by the Royal Horticulture Society, London and was designated as the 'State Flower of Manipur' in 1989.
