IMPHAL: The topmost organization of the Meitei people in Manipur's Jiribam district has charged a local MLA of providing weapons and money to extortionists. This was stated in a release put out on Thursday by Jiri Apunba Lup, an important organization representing the community.
In spite of several attempts, the accused legislator has not provided an immediate reaction to the accusations. The allegations are still unsubstantiated, and the incident has been controversial due to the prevailing tensions in the region.
As per Jiri Apunba Lup, the MLA had organized meetings and also extended help in the form of financial aid, war equipment, and accessories to some groups, as per reports. However the organization asserted that the Muslim populace in the region wanted peace and did not concur with the so-called plans, thus bringing about the MLA's alleged plans to create turmoil to failure.
Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023, leaving over 250 dead and thousands displaced. The situation has hit law and order in the state hard, with tensions still high in many districts, including Jiribam.
Following the long-standing crisis, President's Rule was imposed in Manipur by the Central Government on February 13, 2025, after the resignation of erstwhile Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The state assembly, which was initially to continue until 2027, has been brought under suspended animation, and governance is now left with the central administration.
As the situation continues to unfold, the charges leveled against the MLA are bound to attract more attention. The authorities have not as yet confirmed if there is an investigation into the allegations, but the charges add to the already tense political and ethnic situation in Manipur.
