IMPHAL: According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), Thursday night's mild earthquakes in Manipur's Ukhrul district measured 4.5 on the Richter scale.

The 4.5-magnitude earthquake, which happened at 10:52 p.m., was quite minor.

According to reports, the earthquake's epicenter is located in the eastern part of Manipur's Ukhrul district.

"Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.6 happened on 15-12-2022, 10:42:52 IST, Lat: 24.93 & Long: 94.86, Depth: 86 Km, Location: 38km E of Ukhrul Manipur, India," the NCS noted in a tweet late on Thursday.

84 kilometers north of Imphal, near the Ukhrul district headquarters, a resident claimed, "Many people in my locality are not aware of it."

Another inhabitant also reported experiencing a brief, slight earthquake.

In Ukhrul and other regions of the state, no reports of property damage or fatalities were made.

According to statistics from the United Nations and World Bank, more than 200 million people living in metropolitan India will be at risk of earthquakes by the year 2050. India has recently seen some terrible earthquakes.

An earthquake in Nepal that measured 6.6 on the Richter Scale, took six lives and left a path of devastation serves as a sombre reminder for the northeastern Indian states to update risk assessments of the cities and towns in the area.

Although an earthquake can't be foreseen, relative hazards from one within a city or town can be, provided the data is routinely updated and used for timely revision of design regulations for earthquake-resistant structure construction.

Zone V includes the Northeast. It has the highest intensity and frequency of earthquake occurrences of any of India's five seismic zones, and risk assessments for the entire area need to be revised periodically for better preparedness.

Additionally, the rapid expansion in the number of multi-story and high-rise buildings in Guwahati and other nearby cities and towns as a result of the region's accelerated economic and development growth requires continuous evaluation of the region's earthquake preparation.
