NHRC Investigates Horrific Incident in Manipur: Mob Strips, Parades Kuki Women

IMPHAL: A shocking incident in Manipur has drawn nationwide outrage and prompted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene. On May 4, violent ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur led to a series of disturbing events. Following the circulation of a fake news story about a Meitei woman's alleged rape, a mob of nearly 1000 Meitei men, armed with weapons, stormed into a Kuki-dominated village in Kangpokpi district.

During the chaos of the attack, five Kuki villagers, including two men and three women, managed to escape to a nearby forest. However, their safety was short-lived, as they were later apprehended by the police and being taken to the Nongpok Sekmai police station. Tragically, while in police custody, the group was abducted by the same Meitei mob.

The mob brutally killed one of the men immediately, while the three Kuki women faced an even more horrifying fate. Stripped naked and paraded on the streets, the two women became victims of the mob's uncontrolled rage. One of the women was further subjected to a heart-wrenching gang rape in a nearby field. Adding to the horror, the 19-year-old brother of one of the victims, in a brave attempt to protect his sister, was also killed by the frenzied mob.

The incident sparked nationwide protests and condemnation, with citizens demanding justice for the victims and accountability for the perpetrators. The state and central governments faced intense criticism for their failure to protect the dignity and safety of women.

In response to the heinous incident, the National Human Rights Commission issued a notice to the Manipur government. The NHRC demanded a detailed report within four weeks, including the status of the ongoing investigations into the registered FIRs related to the incident. The report was also expected to cover the health status of the victim women and other injured persons, as well as any compensation provided to the aggrieved individuals and their families.

Moreover, the NHRC sought information on the steps taken or proposed to safeguard the human rights of all citizens, especially women and vulnerable sections of society, from such barbaric acts in the future. The incident raised critical questions about the protection of human rights in the region, prompting the NHRC to hold the authorities accountable for their response and preventive measures.

The incident in Manipur highlighted the dangerous consequences of misinformation and the urgent need for responsible social media use. The circulation of a false rape allegation triggered a series of horrifying events, revealing the vulnerability of communities to violence and hate fueled by such rumors.

As the nation awaits the NHRC's report, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing challenges in safeguarding human rights and protecting vulnerable populations in the face of communal tensions.
