New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed a resolution extending President’s Rule in Manipur for another six months, citing the continuing instability in the state. The resolution, which had earlier cleared the Lok Sabha on July 30, will keep the state under Central rule until February 2026.

Titled “Continuance in force of the Proclamation dated the 13th February 2025 in respect of Manipur,” the resolution was passed under Article 356 of the Constitution. This article allows the President to impose Central rule in a state if its constitutional machinery fails, subject to Parliamentary approval every six months.

With the extension now approved, the Union Government will continue to administer the state directly. Fresh assembly elections may be considered once the situation improves.

President’s Rule was first imposed in Manipur on February 13, 2025, following months of escalating ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities. The unrest has been driven by longstanding issues over land rights, job reservations, and political representation. So far, the clashes have resulted in hundreds of deaths and the displacement of nearly 60,000 people, further deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region.
