Search operations continue in landslide area at Tupul in Manipur

Biren Singh, Pijush Hazarika visit injured persons; death toll 37

KOHIMA: Search operations by the Army, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, SDRF and NDRF at the landslide site at Tupul in Manipur continued on Sunday despite adverse weather conditions owing to heavy rains and fresh landslides last night, even as death toll touched 37.

A Defence communiqué said that the Through Wall Radar and Search and Rescue Dog squad are being employed to hasten the search operation. Besides the 13 Territorial Army personnel and five civilians who were safely rescued, the mortal remains of 23 Territorial Army personnel and 11 civilians have been recovered so far.

The mortal remains of seven personnel of the Territorial Army were sent to the respective home stations by IAF aircraft and an Army helicopter to Kolkata, Bagdogra and Agartala. They were paid full military honours by GOC Red Shield Division and IG IGAR (South) at Imphal on Sunday morning. Similar befitting honours will be paid at respective home stations as well.

Relentless efforts to locate the remaining seven missing Territorial Army personnel and 21 civilians will continue till the last individual is found, the communiqué said.

The communiqué added Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, along with the State's Health Minister, Chief Secretary and DGP visited the Assam Rifles Multispeciality Hospital at Mantripukhri on Sunday.

The Chief Minister interacted with seven injured soldiers of the 107 Infantry Battalion (TA) who survived catastrophic landslide. The Chief Minister enquired about their well-being and prayed for their speedy recovery. He also presented Rs 50,000 each to the injured soldier.

Meanwhile, official sources in Guwahati said that Assam's Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika also visited three injured persons out of five from the State today at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences at Imphal.

Hazarika said afterwards that all five injured persons from Assam will be flown to Guwahati tomorrow on an Air Asia flight.
