Imphal: The Assam rifles has foiled cross-border contraband smuggling in Kulang and Holenphai villages in Manipur's Tengnoupal district.

During a border dominance operation on Friday, the Assam Rifles intercepted four vehicles carrying illicit areca nuts and timbers from over the Indo Myanmar border.

During the operation, the Assam Rifles seized items worth over Rs 86 lakhs.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, the Assam rifles confirmed the same and tweeted, ''ASSAM RIFLES FOILS CROSS BORDER SMUGGLING OF CONTRABANDS

Moreh and Tengnoupal Battalion of #AssamRifles in two separate operations, on 14 Jan, foiled cross border smuggling of contrabands in Kulyang and Holenphai Vill, Tengnoupal Dist and recovered items worth a total Rs 85.64 Lakhs.''

Reportedly, the recovered timbers and areca nuts were valued to be Rs 50.24 lakhs and Rs 45.32 lakhs.

Later, the recovered items, including vehicles and drivers, were handed over to the Tengnoupal district forest department for further action.
