Indian Men's Hockey team defeats Argentina 3-1 at Tokyo Olympics

IMPHAL: A swashbuckling win by the Indian men's national hockey team has led the 'men-in-blue' march into the quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympic Games. With an overwhelming 3-1 victory over the robust and defending champion Argentina in the Pool A match on Thursday, the nation is stomping with enthusiasm and a boasted morale.

An exuberant and enthusiastic N Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, applauded the Indian men's hockey team and congratulated the 'men-in-blue' for their overwhelming win that has further secured India's position into the quarterfinals.

CM Singh emphasized on the love for the sport at his native state and was filled with happiness and delight that the midfielder of the Indian Hockey men's team hails from his own constituency.

CM N Biren Singh in his tweet said, "Congratulations to Indian Men's Hockey team on their win today. Men's hockey matches hold a special place in my locality as our Indian Midfielder Nilakanta Sharma hails from my assembly constituency, Heingang. Keep up the great work. I'm proud of our Indian Hockey Team."

By the virtue of this outstanding victory, India gained an upper-hand with nine points and has dominantly secured the second spot in its group. Now the Indian team with its three wins and one loss in a total of four matches so far, is just a step behind the Australian team (12 pts).

It may be mentioned that, following the initial two quarters that did not witness any goals, India broke the standstill in the 43rd minute. Varun Kumar who opened the scorebook was followed by Vivek Sagar Prasad on the 58th minute and finally Harmanpreet Singh struck in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to steer the Indian team into victory.

On the other hand, the only goal that Argentina managed came from a penalty-corner conversion by Maico Casella.

Meanwhile, India will also compete against its Olympic host Japan, which is still at the base of the table tomorrow.
