Dimapur: A minor girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on December 5 in Dimapur, Nagaland.

The accused has been identified as 33-year-old Bokato Achumi, a resident of Padampukhuri in Dimapur.

According to the PRO and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur police, Relo Aye, the incident took place near Khermahal, Dimapur when the victim was on her way home after shopping. The accused offered her a lift in his autorickshaw after which she was taken to a hotel and allegedly sexually assaulted.

However, the victim managed to inform her family members and in this regard, a case has been registered in a all women police station under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, after which the accused has been arrested by the police.

Earlier this year in August a 43-year-old Naga man in Dimapur had allegedly raped a minor girl who was working as a domestic help in his house since 2017.

The incident came to light after she informed her sister regarding the ordeals she was facing. Later her parents had lodged an FIR at the all women police station in Dimapur and a case was registered under section 354 and 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 6 of the POSCOAct.

Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. Over 32,033 rape cases were reported nationwide, or an average of 88 cases was reported per day, according to the 2019 annual National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.94.2 percent out of 100 percent rapes were committed by perpetrators known to the victim. The share of victims who were minors or below 18 - the legal age of consent - stood at 15.4% down from 27.8% in 2018.

India has been ranked as one of the "countries with the lowest per capita rate of rape".
