KOHIMA: In an effort to strengthen cross-border relations and promote peaceful coexistence, a three-day student exchange programme titled "Discovering Neighbours" was concluded on February 1 at Government High School, Tzurangkong, Nagaland. The initiative was to build unity and cultural understanding among students from Assam and Nagaland.

Organized by the Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland) in partnership with the Friendship Forum and the district administrations of Jorhat and Mokokchung, the programme brought together 30 students from two schools in Assam and 30 students from the host school in Nagaland. Parents, guardians, and teachers joined the occasion, while local families of Chungtiayimsen and Watiyim opened up their homes for the Assam students.

Three days were filled with different activities that included games, cultural exchanges, talent shows, and picnics to establish bonds and friendships among the students. The initiative was also envisioned to alleviate historic tensions between Assam and Nagaland by identifying common heritage and fostering a common identity among youth.

In the closing ceremony, Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Thsuvisie Phoji spoke highly of the initiative as the much-needed bridge for long-lasting peace and amity between the two states. He urged students to take on the experiences of their stay  while emphasizing the importance of countering divisive elements which pose a challenge to border harmony. Phoji appealed for more such programmes, extending beyond borders, to cultivate understanding and cooperation and urged the students to act as ambassadors of peace in their communities.
