MOKOKCHUNG: In order to motivate the general public to help road accident victims during emergencies, Nagaland's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is operating the 'Good Samaritan Scheme' under which anyone who saves the life of a road accident victim by administering immediate assistance and rushing them to the hospital within the 'Golden Hour' will be awarded.

According to the DIPR, Nagaland, the scheme came into effect in 2021 and will remain operational till the completion of the 15th Financial Cycle, i.e., March 31, 2026.

The amount of award for each Good Samaritan would be Rs 5000 per incident. There will also be 10 National Level Awards of Rs 1 lakh each for the most worthy Good Samaritans who will be selected from all those who have been awarded during the year.

A standard and uniform format of acknowledgment will be used by the police/hospitals and furnish to the Appraisal Committee at the District Level comprising the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Chief Medical Officer, and the Regional/District Transport Officer. The Appraisal Committee will scrutinize the details of the Good Samaritan and the incident, under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner before submitting to the Transport Department for release of the cash award.
