Kohima: Tension escalated in Nagaland on Sunday after Armed forces personnel allegedly killed 13 civilians in Tiru village of Mon district.

The incident occurred in Tiru village of Mon district when the security forces allegedly believed to have mistaken the victims as members of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) and ambushed them.

After this, the situation is tense in the district following which the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has appealed to the people to maintain peace.

Reportedly, after the incident, local people came out of the houses and started protesting claiming that those who are killed in the incident were innocent. According to locals, they were on their way back home from a nearby coal mine.

Condemning this incident, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has promised SIT investigation.

"The unfortunate incident of civilian casualties at Oting in Mon district is highly condemnable. Condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. In this case, a high level SIT will investigate and provide justice as per law. Appeal for peace from all sections,'' he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah has also expressed grief over the incident.

''I am deeply pained by the unfortunate incident of Oting in Nagaland. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives. A high-level SIT set up by the state government will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice to the bereaved families,'' he tweeted.
