Nagaland Covid tally soars past 100-case mark after 13 Chennai returnees test positive

Guwahati: With the detection of 13 more Covid-19 cases, all returnees from Chennai, in the last 24 hours, virus cases in Nagaland have now exceeded 100. With the detection of these 13 fresh cases, the total number of cases in Nagaland has now reached 107. The state is yet to report a casualty from the respiratory illness.

"13 new positive cases of COVID-19 has been reported in the last 24 hours out of 252 samples tested.All the samples tested were from Chennai Returnees", Nagaland Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom tweeted moments earlier.

Meanwhile, the first batch of TrueNat machines has reached Nagaland's Dimapur, and the other districts too are soon expected to be equipped with this facility. "I am happy to inform that the first batch of TrueNat Machine has been dispatched today and already installed at DH, Dimapur. The rest of the Districts will follow up", Phom had tweeted earlier.

It may be recalled here that Nagaland reported its first cases of the virus on Tuesday, May 26, after three persons who had returned from Chennai tested positive. After the first cases were detected in the state, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio took to Twitter to : "Unfortunately, two persons in Dimapur and one in Kohima have been tested positive for COVID-19. Please do not panic. We need to handle it with utmost care and responsibility. Necessary action of contact tracing and containment measures are being taken and the situation closely monitored."

Since then, the number of cases has risen dramatically, which can be largely attributed to the return of thousands of citizens who were stuck in other states amid the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.

On Saturday morning, India's total number of Covid-19 cases went past Italy's count with total cases surging to 2,36,657. India is now at the sixth spot in the list of nations with the highest caseloads of the virus. The country's death count stood at 6,642.
