Nagaland Govt Grants District Status To 'Shamator' Sub-Division

DIMAPUR: In a recent development in the northeastern state of Nagaland, the Shamator subdivision in the state has received the approval of becoming a district from now on.

The government of Nagaland took the major decision for the complete up-gradation of the Shamator subdivision to a full-fledge district of Nagaland after various peaceful protests by the communities of the area.

In addition to this districthood to Shamator, the state government also took the decision for the recognition of the Tikhir tribe, a scheduled tribe of Nagaland.

Earlier on 18 December last year the Nagaland government formed three new districts namely Chumukedima, Niuland and Tseminyu. While granting district status to these places, the governing body of Nagaland also made an agreement in view of the grating the position of the district to the Shamator subdivision.

However, with this acceptance of transforming Shamator into a district, the government of Nagaland has a condition for the people that the full upgrade of Shamator into a district will be possible only when the two communities namely Tikhir and Yimkhiung living in the same locality shared a bond of unity.

The Shamator sub-division will be made a district if people from these two communities come together through a correct understanding and sort out all of their issues with each other.

Massive protest headed by Yimkhiung Tribal Council was going on in the state since 3 January 2022 over the demand of providing district status to the Shamator region. The YTC (Yimkhiung Tribal Council) is the apex body of the Yimkhiung community in Nagaland.

On Friday 14 January the Nagaland government in presence of Chief Minister Rio had taken the decision of establishing a third party to interact with the tribal bodies in Shamator and solve their differences.

The general secretary of Yimkhiung Tribal Council, S Tsuyihba informed that the protest rallies were stopped for some time as per the cabinet decision and stated that they will continue to pressurize the government to make Shamator a district by 26 January.
