Nagaland: Massive protests erupt in Peren over alleged mismanagement of COVID-19

Guwahati: On June 7, the public of Nagaland's Peren district poured out onto the streets to express resentment against the district administration and medical personnel for releasing 96 Haryana returnees on June 23 without conducting a retest, as per protocol.

The public in Peren protested against the local district administration for releasing the returnees without conducting a second test. It has been reported the protest was organized by the Zeliangrong Students Union Nagaland(ZSUN), Kuki Students' Organization(KSO) and Zeme Youth Organization Nagaland(ZYON). Several villages and towns in Peren district have shown their resentment through their placards and banners.

While most of the protesters raised slogans, some were seen raising banners and placards. "ERROR 404 Doctor, Administration not found in Peren", one placard said, while another accused that "Absconding from duty is not sincere apology". "Govt meet the demand of ZSUN", read another placard.  These agitators also submitted a representation to the Chief Minister of the state, Neiphiu Rio, through the DC of Peren.

According to the demonstrators, this move has put Peren district in a precarious position and at risk of community transmission of the dreaded COVID-19 virus.

The convenor of the joint action committee (JAC) for COVID-19 informed that the protest was held against the 'lack of response' from the health department for implementation of immediate measures that should have been taken in the six containment zones of the district.

Citing a lack of leadership and responsibilities in the district task force (DTT) and district administration in their efforts combating the deadly Covid 19, the convener informed that the Deputy Commissioner's office was locked.
